Dealing with Sickness

This morning is the third message in our new series, “Buckle Up: it’s going to be a wild ride!”  The series is built on 8 stories in the Bible that feature a belt.  Each Bible belt story provides life-changing insight on dealing with the struggles of this life that can sometimes leave you feeling like you are on a roller-coaster ride.  We have studied the Passover Belt that deals with fear and Joab’s Belt that deals with anger.  Our Bible belt story this morning is Gehazi’s Belt and teaches us how to deal with sickness.  Now first of all, we need to identify who Gehazi was.  Gehazi was the right hand man, the protégé, the devoted servant of the Prophet Elisha.  Remember, there were two famous prophets of ancient Israel with very similar names: Elijah and Elisha.  Elijah came first.  He was the one who called down fire from heaven and was taken up into heaven in a chariot of fire.  Elisha, however, was the miracle worker.  And it is he and his servant Gehazi that are featured in our Bible belt story this morning.  At the heart of this story is a health crisis; a grave sickness that actually ends in death.  Well, that’s not exactly accurate; death is not the end of the story but we’ll get to that later.

This story brings to light the challenge of dealing with sickness.  Every one must wrestle with sickness.  No one is exempt.  The sickness we face may be our own or it may be in the life of someone we care about.  Now there are many kinds of sickness.  One can experience sickness physically, mentally, relationally and of course, spiritually.

Every kind of sickness needs God’s healing power and God’s healing power can swallow up every kind of sickness.
